Karen Scheel Holley therapist West Hartford CT

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience in the mental health field. I have worked with individuals with a wide range of mental health issues and have worked with people of all ages. My extensive background has provided me with the knowledge and skills to address a broad range of issues. In addition to therapy for anxiety, other specialty areas include treatment of depression and other mood disorders and helping individuals to navigate life transitions and improve their interpersonal relationships. I particularly enjoy working with the college age/emerging adult population.

My approach is compassionate, collaborative and encouraging. You will find me very approachable and down-to-earth. I know that taking the steps to seek therapy can be difficult, especially if you’ve never been in therapy before. The actual work of therapy can be challenging. It is my goal to provide a safe and supportive environment to help you grow and achieve your goals.

My Approach

My approach to treating anxiety is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In general terms, CBT focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Therapy involves developing a new relationship with anxiety, a new attitude about the role anxiety plays in your life and developing skills for identifying and changing ways of thinking and behaving in relation to your anxiety. An important aspect of therapy is developing an understanding of how one’s behavior can actually serve to strengthen anxiety and learning and practicing new behaviors in order to change these patterns. I often integrate Mindfulness based approaches into the therapy as appropriate as well. The exact format of therapy will depend on your specific issues, goals and preferences. We will work together to identify your goals and to identify steps to help you meet those goals.

If you come to see me for something other than anxiety, my approach will depend on your needs and the issues for which you are seeking help. Together we will identify your goals and therapy will be tailored to address your specific needs, concerns and goals. I welcome you to contact me to see if we might be a good fit.
